MFT Card Design Superstar contest – Coloring Virtuoso 2020
Hello, and welcome back to my blog, my crafty friends. I love participating in the SuperStar Challenge organised by My Favorite Things. It is an amazing contest, and it helps me think out of the box and be more creative with my stamps. I made this card for the Coloring Virtuoso Contest using 13 stamp sets.
A short story behind this card –
I haven’t visited my family in over two and a half years, and this year I had planned to visit them in time for my sister’s birthday so that I could throw her a surprise party. Life, however, had other plans, and because of the travel restrictions imposed now, I had to tweak my birthday surprise. While thinking of ways to make up for missing my sister’s birthday, I thought of this card, which would be our way of living the surprise I had planned for her, until next year when I will be able to throw her that well-deserved party. And so, I made a card depicting the surprise birthday scene and tried to capture all the hushed excitement, behind-the-scenes planning, and fun and frolic, before the big “SURPRISE” shout out. I tried to show two different rooms in my card – the bedroom with my sister (who just woke up, oblivious to the surprise in store for her) and me in it, and the dining/living room with my family and my sister’s friends preparing for the surprise party.
My sister loves the colour pink so much that too much pink is never a thing for her. Hence, pink is the main focus of the card, especially in the bedroom. Also, lately, we both have been fascinated with the big floral decals, and so I decided to add them to the bedroom wall as well. I tried to include many such things that are close to our heart, and the amazing variety of MFT stamps made it so much easier for me to make the card I envisioned. Though this car involved a lot of masking, stamping and colouring, it was all worth it to bring that million-dollar smile on my sister’s face.
I did go way out of my comfort zone to make this card, and I do hope you like it. Oh, and did you notice the naughty cat getting pulled up by the balloon and the little piggy giggling away?
I used the below stamps to create this card –
1) SY Sending Sweet Celebration Wishes Stamp Set
2) SY All Tucked In Stamp Set
3) SY Sweet Shop Stamp Set
4) SY Pawty Time Stamp Set
5) SY Scene Builder Stamp Set
6) SY Easter Bunnies Stamp Set
7) Fluttering Friends Stamp Set
8) Rose Garden Stamp Set
9) BB Our Story Stamp Set
10) SY Always Bring A Smile Stamp Set
11) Floral Focus Stamp Set
12) SY Piggy Pebbles Stamp Set
13) SY Friendly Foxes Stamp Set
Whenever I want to create a scene on my card, I start by stamping the images on a piece of printer paper. This method helps me to figure out where I want to place the images, and I can change it if I want to. Once I am happy with the placement, I stamp the images on a masking sheet, and fussy cut them with my scissors.
Next, I cut a piece of Neenah Solar White 110lb Cardstock to 5 * 11 inches using my trimmer. After that, I stamped the images in the foreground on it first using Extreme Black Hybrid Ink. I then masked them and stamped the images in the background. I have mentioned the detailed process below.
Stamping for the Bedroom:
First, I stamped the slippers and the cat from the All Tucked In Stamp Set.
Next, I stamped the vase from the Our Story Stamp Set using the above guide I created as reference. Then I masked it and stamped the side table from the All Tucked In Stamp Set. I masked the fishbowl while inking the stamp, unmasked it and stamped it on the card panel.
After that, I masked the side table and stamped the bed image from the same stamp set and masked it.
Since I wanted to stamp the party hat on the fox from the Friendly Foxes Stamp Set, I masked the fox from the Sending Sweet Celebration Wishes Stamp Set and stamped the hat, masked it and then stamped the fox from the Friendly Foxes Stamp Set.
Then I masked this image and stamped the flower from the Fluttering Friends Stamp Set behind the fox.
I wanted only the rose in the centre, so I masked the rest of the stamp and inked the rose from the Rose Garden Stamp Set, unmasked the image and stamped it on the card panel.
Next, I masked it and followed the same method for the magnolia from the Floral Focus Stamp Set. I then masked the image and stamped the rose from the Rose Garden Stamp Set behind it. After masking this rose, I stamped the tiny flower from the topmost portion of the same stamp set. Then I stamped the flower from the Fluttering Friends Stamp Set.
I then stamped the butterflies from the Always Bring A Smile and Easter Bunnies Stamp Sets.
After that, I stamped the moon painting frame and the banner from the All Tucked In Stamp Set. Then I stamped the cactus from the Our Story Stamp Set.
Stamping for the Dining / Living room:
I started by stamping the fox, penguin and tortoise from the Sending Sweet Celebration Wishes Stamp Set.
Then I masked the bunny from the same stamp set and stamped the party hat for the bird and the other tortoise. Next, I masked these hats and stamped the bird from the All Tucked In Stamp Set, and the tortoise from the Always Bring A Smile Stamp Set.
After masking these images, I stamped the cat from the Pawty Time Stamp Set. Since I wanted to make it look like the balloon was pulling the cat up, I cut the stamp in the centre, and tilted the cat image and kept the balloon straight. I used a sheet of Acetate on the cardstock to help me place this stamp as I wanted. Then picked it up with my Misti and stamped it.
I then masked the dog and the big gift from the Pawty Time Stamp Set and stamped the party hat. Then I masked it and stamped the pig from the Piggy Pebbles Stamp Set.
Next, I stamped the party hat of the cat from the Piggy Pebbles Stamp Set after masking the rest of the image. Then I masked this hat and stamped the little fox.
After masking the fox, I stamped the balloons from the Sweet Shop Stamp Set. Then I stamped the table with the two mice from the same stamp set.
To create the window, I first masked the images and drew the window using my Copic Multiliner pen along with my ruler. Then I masked the frame and stamped the leaves from the Always Bring a Smile Stamp Set. After that, I masked the leaves and stamped the tree from the Scene Builder Stamp Set, masked it and stamped the cloud from the same stamp set.
I then used my ruler and a Copic Multiliner pen to draw the wall and floor for both the bedroom and dining/living room. Next, I stamped the streamers from the Sweet Shop Stamp Set. Then I used my Copic Markers to colour all the images.

After that, I wrote my sister’s name on the banner using a Copic Multiliner pen and drew in the white lines on the tiles using my Sakura White Gelly Roll pen and a ruler.
To create the card base, I cut a sheet of Neenah Solar White 110lb cardstock to 5 * 11 inches. Next, I cut another piece of cardstock to 5 1/2 * 11 inches and scored it at 1/2 inch. I then assembled these two pieces to create a card base. Lastly, I stuck the card panel on the card base using Precision Glue.
I hope you enjoyed reading the process of my card as much as I enjoyed making it.
