Congratulatory Card using Mama Elephant stamps

As crafters, we want to do so much and have so many projects in mind but on some days we just run out of ideas and no matter how hard we try, we don’t manage to think of new projects. On such days, all we need is something to get our mojo back. On one such day, I was trying hard to think of a theme, I got news of something great happening in a dear ones’ life, this occasion called for a congratulatory card. Once I decided the theme, the ideas just came flowing in.

The process for the card I made is as follows.

I first prepared the critters. For this, on a Canson XL Mix Media paper, I stamped the dog, cat, chicken, pig and rabbit from the Lunar Animals stamp set using Versafine Onyx Black ink. I then die cut these images using the coordinating die set. To give a festive look to the animals, I used the same stamp and stamped a crown, party hat and cap on Canson XL Mix Media paper, and then die cut them. I also stamped the Hooray, Congrats and the little balloons of various shapes from the Mama Elephant – Celebration Balloons stamp set and cut them with the coordinating die set.

Once I was done stamping and die cutting all the images, I coloured them using Zig clean color real brush markers.

Below is the list of the colours I used:

  • Chicken – Lemon Yellow (051) and Bright Yellow (052)
  • Pig – Light Pink (026) and Derwent watercolour brush
  • Dog – Mustard (067) and Beige (072)
  • Cat – Bright Yellow (052) and Derwent watercolour brush
  • Rabbit – Flesh Colour (071), Light Pink (026)  and Derwent watercolour brush
  • Crown – Yellow Gold from Kuretake Gansai Tambi Starry colors
  • Hat – Lemon Yellow (051), Bright Yellow (052) and Carmine Red (022)
  • Party hat – Bright Yellow (052) and Derwent watercolour brush
  • Hooray and Congrats – Turquoise Green (042) and Persian Blue (032)
  • Little Balloons  – Wine Red (024) and Carmine Red (022)

I then started working on the background. I cut a rectangle frame out of Canson XL Mix Media paper using the largest die from the Mama Elephant – Peek a Frame die set (yes, I really love this set to be honest and I use it with most of my cards) and ran it through my Big Shot. I then inked the cardstock using Round Sponge Ink Blending Tool and Peacock feathers distress ink for the sky. To create the white patches you can see in the background, I sprinkled some water droplets using Tim Holtz Distress Sprayer on the coloured area and then dabbed it with a kitchen towel; Distress inks have this magical reaction with water and I love the effect.

I used Canson XL Mix Media paper for the hill too! First, I cut the rectangle frame using the same Mama Elephant die I used for the sky background. Then, I cut the hill using Lawn Fawn – Stitched Hillside Border die. After this, I coloured the hill using Mowed Lawn Distress Ink and since I wanted the similar effect as the sky, on the grass too, I repeated the same process and splattered some water on the hill using Tim Holtz Distress Sprayer and dabbed it with a kitchen towel.

Once dry, I stuck the hill on top of the sky cardstock. I wanted to add some dimension to the card, so I stuck the little critters, balloons and the sentiments on the card using foam tape.

I stuck the cardstock to the card base, and my card was ready! I’m happy to tell you’ll that special person really loved the card!
